12/20/04 - Smithtown Democrats donate food and clothing to the poor...

The Smithtown Dems have been collecting donations of food, clothing, and other items, culminating with today's drop off to  St Patrick's Outreach collection program for distribution to the poor. Smithtown Dems; Sal Loiacano, Tony Giordano and Pat Biancaniello, transported the items to the church, where outreach volunteers were busy bagging and preparing the items for other volunteers to drive them to the poor of this community.

"The need is year-round" was the message that outreach volunteer Terry Sherland wanted us to convey.
Dems collection organizer Pat Biancaniello added "There is so much good that goes on behind the scenes in Smithtown.   This is a great program and there are families right here in Smithtown that benefit from these donations.  We are just trying to do our little part to help."

Support The Troops Rally - Great Success!

SupportTroops050104a.jpg (54210 bytes)The Smithtown Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10870 and the American Legion Post 833  sponsored a Support The Troops Rally on Saturday, May 1, 2004. This rally took place at the Veterans Plaza, W. Main Street, Smithtown. Smithtown Supervisor, Patrick Vecchio and County Executive Steve Levy were the guest speakers.

SupportTroops050104b.jpg (23545 bytes) This was a non-partisan event neither for nor against the military's involvement in Iraq. Just a way to recognize how grateful we are to those who are being asked to sacrifice so much.

A collection drive was held for donations to help our American soldiers recovering at Walter Reed Hospital in Maryland. These men and women were injured or contracted illnesses while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

SupportTroops050104c.jpg (72891 bytes)Democratic committee person and rally organizer Pat Biancaniello, drove the collection items down to Maryland the following day.

Memorial Day, 2004 -
Kings Park

Smithtown Democratic Committee member, Thelma "Tami" Rafle was honored by Good Shepherd Hospice with the 2002 Heart of the Hospice Award on June 15, 2002. Good Shepherd Hospice, formerly Good Samaritan, Mercy and St. Charles Hospice, provides care and comfort for end-of –life patients. The hospice provides care to approximately 350 Nassau and Suffolk patients and their families each year . According to the hospice, the greatest challenge is meeting the costs of providing the appropriate level of care to the patients served with the shortfall of reimbursement available.

"Mrs. Rafle being aware of this balance has been a dedicated volunteer for seven years for St. Charles Hospice and now for Good Shepherd Hospice and has truly kept the mission of hospice close to heart, as she has been able to raise funds to help support our work", notes Marianne Gillan, President & CEO of the hospice.

Congratulations Tami.
