Smithtown Democrats Elect New Leadership

In their regularly scheduled meeting, on Monday July 25, 2005, a full house unanimously elected long time Committee person Elaine Turley as Chair of the Smithtown Democratic Committee.  Turley is filling the position recently vacated by Tom Lambert.  Also elected to the position of Executive Vice Chair was Deborah Monaco, leaving a vacancy in the Corresponding Secretary’s position, which Monaco held.

“We are focused on the upcoming election and are excited by the positive reactions our candidates have received from the people of Smithtown.” Turley said.  “The incumbents keep saying it’s time for a change, and we agree!”

Monaco added, “We’ve never had a stronger slate of candidates, and Smithtown is in need of new leadership. ”

Democratic candidates Bill Holst – Supervisor, Pat Biancaniello and Grace Kelly McGovern – Town Council, Dan Ryan – Highway Supervisor, Pat Byne and Mike Lebate – County Legislators, have been busy walking door to door and meeting with community groups to get their message out.

Chair: Elaine Turley

Elaine and husband Bill, live in Fort Salonga with their two children, Brendan and Erica, and their pooch Rocky. The Turley children attend  school in the Kings Park Central School District. Elaine has been an active volunteer in community civic associations, parent associations, youth groups and a number of business organizations, including Past President of the Kings Park Chamber of Commerce.

Elaine is an independent Title Closer, and a past Executive Vice Chair of the Smithtown Democratic Committee.

Executive Vice Chair: Deborah Monaco,

Debbie, born and raised in Smithtown, is now raising her own daughter in her childhood home.  Deborah has served as the Democratic State Committee woman of the 7th Assembly District for 4 years.  Ms. Monaco’s community activism was nurtured throughout her life by her civic activist parents, the late Neil and Shirley Monaco.

First Vice Chair: Carl Hirschhorn

Carl, a 28-year resident of the Town of Smithtown, raised two children, now grown, in Commack.  In addition to his many years of community activism, Carl is Chairman of the Smithtown Youth Board.

Second Vice Chair:  Colleen Maher

Colleen and her husband Ed, live with their three children, 2 girls and 1 boy ages 23, 13, & 15, in Kings Park.  Colleen is very active in the community, volunteering as a religion teacher, various positions within Cub Scout Pack 535, Smithtown Democratic Committee, PTA member, and various community fundraisers.

Colleens main goal - "Get democrats elected!"

Colleen is a Special Education Paraprofessional, in the Kings Park school district.

Treasurer: Joel Schleifer, a Certified Public Accountant and managing partner of Perlman, Schleifer and Perrone, CPA’s located in Hauppauge NY, has lived in Commack for 21 years. He and his wife are raising 2 children in our community.  Joel is an active member of Temple Beth David in Commack, a Government Affairs Director of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants and Chairman of the Not-for-Profit and Government Auditing Committee of the Suffolk Chapter.

Corresponding Secretary: Agnes Maginnis

Recording Secretary: Marian Preisler, a 36 year resident of Kings Park, and her late husband Robert, raised 3 children, now grown and married, in Kings Park.  Since retiring from 20 years of service with the Suffolk County Department of Social Services, Mrs. Preisler has worked as a consultant assisting clients in need of Medicaid benefits, many of them senior citizens.  Marian volunteers at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church as a bingo night assistant, a wedding host and a St. Vincent DePaul volunteer. Marian Preisler has been a member of the Smithtown Democratic Committee for 12 years and has served as an officer for 6 years.  Marian is also a member of the Kings Park Civic Association.
