Smithtown
Councilwoman Patricia Biancaniello, the lone Democrat on the
town board, plans to announce today her intention to run for
town supervisor.
Biancaniello will go up against current Supervisor Patrick
Vecchio, a Republican who is the longest-serving supervisor in
Long Island history. She plans to hold a news conference
Monday on the steps of Town Hall, where she said she will
introduce two candidates to run with her for the open town board
seats in November.
Biancaniello said she will make her first official statement on
Patrick Halpin's Cablevision show, "Meet the Leaders," which is
taped today but will air Wednesday.
"This is not about Patricia Biancaniello, and it's not about
Patrick Vecchio. It's about the people of Smithtown," said
Biancaniello, 55. "This is about them, and the future and the
integrity and reputation of the town of Smithtown."
Suffolk
County Democratic Chairman Richard Schaffer noted it would be an
uphill battle to wrest the seat from Vecchio, who took 56
percent of the popular vote in 2005 in a strong Republican town,
but he said Biancaniello has a good opportunity. He referenced
the ongoing investigation by the Suffolk district attorney into
the town's building department as an example for the need for a
shake-up in leadership.
"She's someone concerned about her community, and I think she
represents a change from business as usual," Schaffer said. Two
of the four town board seats plus Vecchio's position are to be
filled in the election.
Biancaniello said she is looking to improve communications
between the board and town departments, and wants to use work
sessions for "real discussions" on issues such as zoning and
purchases.
Vecchio, 80, has been supervisor since 1978. In 1990, he
switched parties from Democratic to Republican. He had no
comment for this story.
Smithtown Republican leader William Ellis said he was surprised
Biancaniello would relinquish her council seat to run against
the popular supervisor.
"I think that the voters of Smithtown have supported Supervisor
Vecchio for 32 years, and with his fiscal prudence, they will be
supporting him again - without a doubt."
Republican Thomas McCarthy, a 12-year veteran of the town board,
said he plans to run for re-election.

| Smithtown Democratic Committee's Annual Food Drive

On December 21, 2007, with food
collected at their annual food drive, the Smithtown Democratic
Committee delivered a skid full of non-perishable items to the Long
Island Cares warehouse at 10 Davids Drive in Hauppauge.
Represented by Dems Food Drive
coordinator and Vice Chair, Carl Hirschhorn,
Town Councilwoman Pat Biancaniello, Highway Superintendent Dan Ryan,
and Town Chair Elaine Turley, the committee met with Ken Zone, LI
Cares Operations Manager and Kristine Kossegi Lehn, Agency Relation
Manager. They discussed further what the needs of the food bank
were and what the Smithtown Democrats could do to help.
 Kossegi
Lehn said that it often surprises people to learn that there are
many thousands of people who are at risk of hunger on Long Island, a
region officially designated as one of the most prosperous in the
United States. She said that the Harry Chapin Food Bank, which
opened in 1982, delivers food to over 600 food pantries, soup
kitchens, shelters, group homes, day treatment facilities, senior
nutrition sites and day care centers in Nassau and Suffolk
counties. These agencies, in turn, distribute the food to their
clients and/or provide meals from the food received. They emphasize
the need for planned nutritious menus and help these agencies by
creating a weekly menu of foods based on its current inventory.
Zone emphasized that a major
portion of the food they distribute goes to the “working poor” and
the elderly who have to decide between heating their homes, feeding
themselves and their children, and health care. He said that
although the holiday season brings the largest amount of food
donated; the need is greater after the holidays in January and
February when fuel prices are the highest and donations tend to drop
off.
Long Island Cares' goals are to
provide emergency food assistance where and when it is needed and to
sponsor community programs that help families achieve
self-sufficiency. The Harry Chapin Food Bank accepts non-perishable
food as well as frozen foods that they can store in the warehouse’s
huge refrigerated room.

Dear Editor,
On Election Night, November 8th,
the voters of Smithtown elected two Democrats to town government –
something that has not happened for about a decade.
We are confident that Patricia
Biancaniello will bring needed balance to the town board. To not
only provide oversight and transparency, but to work with the
Republican majority to ensure that the needs of the constituents in
Smithtown are met.
Dan Ryan, as Smithtown Highway
Superintendent, will work with what is one of the best teams of
highway employees on Long Island. He will work hard to bring
fiscally responsible and efficient management, and to provide
outstanding highway services and strong, personal constituent
services.
We thank your readers and all
voters in Smithtown for supporting our candidates. The voters have
shown that they are willing to give Democrats a chance to prove that
they will bring quality leadership to our community. I know that in
return, Democrats Patricia Biancaniello and Dan Ryan will work very
hard to provide the quality representation that the voters of
